CHAPTER 7
LOLA
What the hell was this guy doing to me? We were playing five questions, but he had managed to get me to admit all the things I loved about this town within ten minutes of sitting on his patio.
Some of the things Iâd admitted, I honestly thought I was parroting from my mother. But as I talked about them, I realized I really did love them.
I liked not having to lock my doors at night. I liked that everyone knew everyone else, though I hated that it included knowing everyoneâs business.
âWhat do you mean?â he asked, raising an eyebrow as I said that.
âThe gossip in this town drives me crazy,â I said with a heavy sigh. âPeople think that because theyâve known you their whole lives, theyâre entitled to know everything about you. I mean, if I sneeze alone in my office, Iâll get a text message saying bless you from across town. There are no secrets here. No adventures to be had.â I shrugged. âI feel like Iâve never really lived, you know?â
âNot really,â he said as he came back to the table with our steaks. He set down the platter then fixed my plate for me.
âDo you like Disney movies?â I asked, thinking that was the best way to clarify what I meant.
âWeird fourth question,â he teased. He sat down across from me and poured each of us a glass of wine before cutting into his steak. âI guess. Some of them are okay.â
âBeauty and the Beast?â
âClassic.â He nodded.
âAt the beginning of the movie, Belle is singing about how nothing ever changes. Every day is exactly the same. Which is why she reads fantasy books. Itâs the only escape she can have.â
âUntil the beast shows up,â he reminded me, his eyes glittering as he grinned.
âAh,â I corrected him, tilting my glass toward him to emphasize my point. âHe didnât come to her. She went to him. She had to leave town to find her adventure.â
âShe found Stockholm syndrome,â he countered.
âWellâ¦â I waved away his argument. âIt came with a pretty bitchinâ library. So, compromise is important.â
Sean threw back his head and laughed, the sound deep and beautiful. He had a great laugh. I couldnât help joining in, and soon, weâd moved away from my feelings about being stuck here to lighter topics.
After weâd eaten, I helped him clean up, and we moved to the front porch with more wine.
âDo you want some pie?â he asked before we settled into our seats. âI picked up some ice cream to go with it.â
âI couldnât eat another bite,â I told him apologetically. âI never eat a dinner that big.â I rubbed my hand over my stomach and sighed happily. âIt was wonderful, though. Thank you for inviting me.â
Silence fell between us, but it was comfortable. The sun was still up but would be setting soon, and I honestly didnât want the evening to end.
âWould you like to go for a walk?â I asked.
âIâd love to.â He stood and took my glass, taking it inside before rejoining me on the porch.
